About Sunflow Energy

  • Sunflow Energy is an integrated energy developer and EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) company headquartered in the United States. We invest in, develop, design, build, and operate utility-scale and distributed power projects globally, with a primary focus on solar, battery storage, and microgrid systems across Africa. Sunflow is a US government-trusted contractor with active offices in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Turkey, and the United States.

  • Sunflow operates across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Our primary markets are Zimbabwe and Zambia, where we have offices and teams on the ground. We have delivered projects and supply across South Sudan, Guinea, Madagascar, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Nigeria, Turkey, North Macedonia, and Serbia. Our head office is in Truckee, California, with additional US operations in Dallas, Texas and Miami, Florida.

  • Sunflow Mission Critical (SFMC) is the mission-critical construction division of the Sunflow platform, headquartered in Dallas, Texas. SFMC specializes in the design, procurement, and construction of data centers, cable landing stations, secure government facilities, and other mission-critical infrastructure in frontier and developing markets. SFMC operates alongside Sunflow Energy under a unified delivery methodology called ReadyState.

Services and Capabilities

  • A microgrid is a locally controlled power system that integrates multiple energy sources — solar panels, battery storage, diesel generators, wind, and grid connection — into a single, intelligently managed platform. A microgrid controller automatically balances these sources to maximize uptime and efficiency. Microgrids can operate connected to the national grid or in island mode, meaning they function independently when the grid fails or is unavailable. Sunflow designs and builds microgrids for mining operations, agricultural facilities, commercial buildings, government compounds, and data centers.

  • A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores electrical energy and releases it when needed, smoothing out supply gaps from solar or grid instability. In Africa, BESS is particularly valuable because it allows facilities to store solar generation during the day and use it at night, or to continue operating during grid outages. Sunflow's BESS solutions are modular and scalable, ranging from 2 MWh for C&I applications to 200+ MWh for utility-scale grid-connected projects.

  • An Independent Power Producer (IPP) is a private company that generates electricity and sells it under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to an off-taker — typically a utility, mining company, or large commercial operator. In Zambia and Zimbabwe, IPPs play a critical role in closing the gap between grid supply and demand. Sunflow develops utility-scale IPP projects in both countries, working with land partners, lenders, and off-takers to bring projects from feasibility through construction and long-term operation.

  • A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a long-term contract between a power generator and a buyer. Under a PPA, the generator builds and operates a power facility and sells the electricity produced to the buyer at a fixed or structured rate over a defined period — typically 15 to 25 years. PPAs provide revenue certainty for project financing and cost predictability for buyers. Sunflow structures its utility-scale development projects around bankable PPAs with established off-takers.

  • Yes, for Sunflow Energy projects. We hire and train our own local teams, purchase our own materials, and maintain direct command and control of every project from design through commissioning. We do not rely on a chain of subcontractors in the way many international developers do. This model allows us to move faster, hold quality at the ground level, and build local careers rather than just executing contracts.

Zambia

  • Zambia's mining sector — particularly copper and critical minerals production — consumes approximately 50% of the country's available electricity. Mining operations require consistent, high-quality power to run processing equipment, ventilation systems, and safety infrastructure around the clock. When power is unreliable, production stops. Copper output in one region jumped from 808 to 35,000 tonnes when reliable power was restored. Sunflow's hybrid microgrid systems are designed specifically for mining operations in Zambia, reducing diesel dependence and improving uptime.

  • Zambia faces a demand of approximately 2,400 MW against an available supply of around 900 MW — a deficit of roughly 1,500 MW. This gap constrains every sector of the economy, from mining and agriculture to commercial operations and the data infrastructure being built to serve the continent's digital growth. Sunflow has utility-scale solar projects in development in Zambia specifically to address this deficit.

  • Yes. Zambia has an open market framework for renewable energy investment, with government support for currency exchange risk, tax incentives, and repatriation of funds. In April 2025, the Ministry of Energy reduced the approval period for solar project applications from over six months to 48 hours. ZESCO operates as the primary off-taker for grid-connected projects under long-term PPAs. Sunflow has established offices, relationships, and active projects in Zambia and is available to discuss partnership and co-development opportunities.

  • Sunflow's Zambia portfolio includes commercial and industrial solar and storage projects across mining, agriculture, and commercial sectors; the Kiyona Solar Project (20 MW, pilot initiated); the Julen Solar Plant (180 MW, MOU secured); and additional utility-scale projects in development. Sunflow also has offices and local teams in Lusaka supporting ongoing development and operations.

Zimbabwe

  • Sunflow has been operating in Zimbabwe since 2018, starting with the design and installation of a microgrid system for the US Embassy in Harare. We now have a permanent office in Harare, local teams trained to US electrical standards, and an active portfolio spanning commercial, industrial, agricultural, and utility-scale projects. Zimbabwe is Sunflow's deepest market, and our team there operates year-round.

  • Zimbabwe's national grid operates well below demand, with load shedding of 12 or more hours per day common in many areas. The grid's hydropower base at Kariba Dam has been under pressure from drought, and thermal fuel imports are constrained by currency shortages. Solar paired with battery storage allows mines, farms, commercial operators, and government facilities to run independently of the national grid — or to supplement it reliably. Zimbabwe's renewable energy market is projected to grow from 1.41 GW in 2025 to 3.98 GW by 2031.

  • Zimbabwe holds significant reserves of platinum, lithium, gold, and chrome — all of which are critical to global technology and energy transition supply chains. Extracting and processing these minerals requires reliable, high-quality power. Sunflow provides power infrastructure to mining operators across Zimbabwe, enabling production to continue regardless of national grid availability.

  • Sunflow's Zimbabwe portfolio includes the US Embassy Harare solar and BESS microgrid retrofit; commercial and industrial solar and storage projects in Beatrice and surrounding regions across mining, agriculture, and commercial sectors; and the Alaska Solar Project (100 MW utility-scale, LOI secured), which is Sunflow's flagship IPP development in Zimbabwe.

Projects

  • Every Sunflow project is engineered to be bankable from day one. That means US government-standard design documentation, a team with a demonstrated delivery history across complex markets, local infrastructure and relationships already in place, and structured off-take arrangements with established counterparties. Sunflow's leadership has experience on both sides of the due diligence table, and our projects are built to meet the requirements of development finance institutions, commercial lenders, and equity investors.

  • Sunflow's portfolio spans 1,112 MW of generation and 639 MWh of storage across Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The team has developed, financed, and exited a 509 MW wind portfolio in Serbia, delivered embassy microgrid retrofits across three continents totaling 9 MW and 34 MWh, and has active utility-scale projects in development across Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Madagascar. The leadership team brings 40+ years of combined executive experience in Africa and 20+ years in solar, storage, and wind engineering.

  • Africa currently has 0.3 MW of data center capacity per million people, compared to 158 MW in the United States — a gap of more than 500 times. McKinsey projects the African data center market to grow 3.5 to 5.5 times by 2030, requiring $10 to $20 billion in investment. Reliable power is identified as the number one constraint on that growth. Sunflow has utility-scale projects in development in the markets where data center expansion is most active, with a pipeline capable of supporting 100 to 250 MW deals.

  • Sunflow works across Fixed-Fee Priced (FFP), Design-Build, Construction Management at Risk (CMAR), and Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) delivery models. For IPP development, we structure projects around long-term PPAs with bankable off-takers. For C&I clients, we offer contracted solar lease arrangements with defined returns. For government clients, we deliver to US Department of State procurement specifications.

Landowners and C&I

  • A solar lease allows a landowner to lease their land to a solar developer in exchange for contracted payments over the life of the project — typically 15 to 25 years. The developer funds, builds, and operates the solar facility on the land and generates revenue from selling the electricity produced. Landowners receive predictable income without any capital outlay. Sunflow has structured solar lease agreements with private landowners across Zimbabwe and Zambia.

  • Most mines and farms in Zimbabwe and Zambia run on a combination of unreliable grid power and diesel generators. Diesel is expensive to procure, store, and maintain — and generators running at low loads are inefficient and damaging over time. Sunflow's hybrid microgrid systems integrate solar and battery storage alongside existing generators, allowing generators to run at their optimal load point and dramatically reducing the hours they need to operate. The result is lower fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs, and more consistent uptime.

  • Timeline depends on project scale and site conditions. Commercial and industrial microgrid installations typically take three to six months from contract to commissioning. Utility-scale projects run longer depending on permitting, grid connection, and financing timelines. Sunflow's ReadyState methodology — used across both Sunflow Energy and Sunflow Mission Critical — compresses schedules through early procurement, day-one purchase order release, and parallel-path mobilization.

Government Work

  • Yes. Sunflow is a trusted contractor for the US DOS and DOD. We have delivered solar and battery microgrid systems for US Embassy facilities in Zimbabwe, Guinea, Madagascar, South Sudan, Brazil, Cabo Verde, and Nigeria. Our systems are engineered to the security and resilience standards of high-security government compounds. Several members of Sunflow Mission Critical's leadership team hold top-secret clearances.

  • Sunflow designs and builds government energy infrastructure to the specifications of the US DOS — standards that govern high-security, high-resilience facilities worldwide. Our systems are UL-certified across multiple categories (UL 1973, UL 9540, UL 1558, UL 1741), NEMA-compliant, and built with redundant hardware and Programmable Logic Controllers that maintain continuous functionality even in the event of component failure.
